About the Author

John Young was raised on a dairy farm in Vermont's “Northeast Kingdom”.  At the earliest opportunity, he escaped the bovine lifestyle and moved to the “big city”, Burlington, where he attended the University of Vermont.  After graduation, he worked in state government and then operated a comic book business for a decade.

In 1994, during one of those periods when the “Yankee Immigration Laws” were laxly enforced, John and his family moved to Charleston.  He quickly fell in love with the Holy City and its history.  He worked as a docent and educational coordinator at the Old Exchange.  He is presently employed as a registered tour guide and docent at the Powder Magazine, providing an outlet for his love of history and penchant for acting.  His interests include, historical research and writing, murder mysteries, fine food, a good cigar and competitive trivia.

A Walk in the Parks

Strolling through downtown Charleston’s four major parks—White Point Garden, Marion Square, Waterfront Park and Washington Square—has just been made easier and more informative with John R. Young’s guidebook.

With this book, Mr. Young, a registered Charleston tour guide and docent at the Powder Magazine, enables readers to self-tour these parks with the knowledge and authority of a city tour guide. Included in each park’s section are the location of the park and a brief history; a map of the monuments, numbered for ease of reference; and the details, history, and full-color picture of each monument described.

The book’s size, along with its waterproof cover, makes it perfect for stashing in a backpack or purse for the tourist on the go, whether you’re from out of town or just down the road.
